The love spoons
The tradition of love spoons dates back from the 17th c. at least. When they meant to declare their love, young men would carve wooden soup-spoons to offer and get favours on them. When young women agreed, the lovers became engaged.
Patterns ranged from the simplest to the most elaborate and from the very local to the most exotic, particularly when sailors were on the point of sailing away for months around the world.
