The three ostrich plumes

As they have been the Prince of Wales' attribute since the battle of Crecy, ostriches' feathers have been nowadays adopted by the Welsh National Rugby Union team. Edward the Black Prince had been wearing them when, at the head of thousands of Welsh, mainly archers, he defeated the French.

This badge comes from the House of Hainaut by the Black Prince's mother. The device 'Ich Dien', on the other hand; which means 'I Serve' in German, is borrowed from the king of Bohemia's coat of arms.

The insignia is made up with three silver or white feathers erected above a coronet of alternate crosses and lilies. the crest tops a dark blue ribbon on which is inscribed the motto.
