The daffodil
Due to their very similar roots, perhaps, the words daffodil and leek are almost the same in Welsh (cenhinen pedr = daffodil ; cenhinen = leek).
If we consider that the leek is the symbol of the victory of the Welsh over the Saxons - meaning the English -, displaying a daffodil at your buttonhole is what the English prefer because it is deprived of its meaning as the symbol of a Nation. It is also prefered by the Welsh, since 19thcentury, as it is a more suitable to wear than a vegetable.
The Welsh display the blade of a daffodil on Saint David's Day, because he is their patron saint.
