The Facts

Until the 4th c. Britain was occupied by Roman cohorts; which emblem was the draco (from the Greek drakon; which means snake). A head of a snake was fixed at the top of a staff and the body and the tail were floating in the air. When the Roman Empire broke up, the dragon naturally became the standard of many Briton and Saxon landlords.
